One day, a farmer donkey fell into a well. It was very sad to hear the poor animal cries as the farmer wondered. What to do. He thought and thought. Finally, he decided that the animal was too old to be of any use of him. He could no longer carry a load as he used to earlier.
The farmer thought to himself. The well is dry and needs to be covered up with mud anyway. There is no use trying to get the donkey out of the well.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to throw the dirt into the well. The donkey understood what was happening and cried terribly. Then, to everybody’s surprise, he became quiet.
After some time, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to throw dirt on the top of the animal, he would shake it off again and take another step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!
